She has been a registered nurse since 1974 and has clinical expertise in the areas of critical care nursing and emergency nursing, with additional experience in triage and prehospital care. In addition to a master’s degree in nursing, Hanes holds a master’s degree in education with a focus on adult and distance learning, and has an interest in both face-to-face and online curriculum development, program planning, and mentoring. As a longtime lead teacher of the writing intensive course in the major, she is committed to fostering better student writing and research.

Her research interests are in the areas of adult education, cognition, mentoring, and teaching/facilitative strategies, and she has presented her scholarship in numerous international, national, and regional venues. Hanes’ dissertation topic involved researching a new construct, composite cognition, as it relates to the teaching/training of military combat nurses. She completed her PhD at the University of San Diego in San Diego, California.

Hanes is a past moderator of the APU Faculty Senate, and is president of the California League for Nursing, an ambassador for the National League for Nursing (NLN), and vice president of the Independent California College and University Faculty Association.
