Admission Requirements

The DNP program prepares graduates for advanced nursing practice in direct (nurse practitioner) and indirect (health care systems leadership) roles. The program conforms to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing standard that calls for DNP-level preparation for all advanced practice nursing specialties by 2015.

Applicants to the DNP program in nursing are expected to meet the admission criteria of the university and the School of Nursing. All applicants for graduate study at APU are required to submit the following documents to the university:

  1. A Graduate Application for Admission
    (Apply Online | Download PDF)
  2. Official transcripts of completion of BSN and MSN. (Transcripts should be sent directly to APU from the registrar’s office of applicants’ previous place of study.)
  3. A copy of any professional certifications/registrations used by nurses with advanced practice, state or national. Transcripts may be used as evidence if needed.
  4. A letter from your advanced practice program stating the number of clinical hours completed as part of that program. (Up to 500 hours may be transferrable toward the DNP program's required total of 1100 hours, per departmental approval.) Show evidence that letter has been requested.

Screening of Applicants

Both the Graduate and Professional Center and the School of Nursing handle screening of applicants for admission into the nursing DNP program. Screening of applicants’ portfolios is conducted by the Graduate and Professional Center and is evaluated according to the admission criteria. The school reviews completed applications for admission to the doctoral program to discern an applicant’s academic qualifications and preparation for advanced graduate study. Upon completion of the screening and review process, the Nursing Doctoral Admission Screening Committee forwards a list of qualified/alternate applicants to the Graduate and Professional Center. The Graduate and Professional Center officially notifies applicants of admission decisions.
