Azusa Pacific Student Goes on African Safari

Posted August 28, 2008

  • In the perfect ending to a four-month study abroad semester in South Africa with Azusa Pacific University, Heather Rice celebrated her 21st birthday and went on a three-day, two-night photo safari with classmates in Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Game Reserve over the weekend of April 26 to 28.

In addition to traveling in typical safari vehicles, the students took walking hikes and night hikes to view wildlife in its natural environment. According to Heather, they were almost charged by elephants and rhinoceros and were told they were lucky to see cheetahs and a rare “black” rhinoceros. They also saw male lions, giraffes, zebras, impalas, kudu, buffalo, baboons and more. At night they slept in tents on platforms.

Established in 1895, Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Game Reserve, set in the heart of Zululand, is the oldest game park in Africa and is the only one under formal conservation in KwaZulu Natal where the “Big 5” animals occur.
