Azusa Pacific University Men's Chorale Hawaii Tour

Posted October 12, 2008

  • An extraordinary harmony of men’s voices filled the air at Bishop Square May 12 as a chorale from across the Pacific performed during the lunch hour.  The Azusa Pacific University Men’s Chorale, led by director Harold Clousing, sang for 45 minutes at the Square as part of a week-long Aohu concert tour that promises to be unique and uplifting.  With 65-70 voices strong, the chorale opened the performance with renditions of the 'Star-Spangled Banner' and 'America the Beautiful.' Terry Franson, Vice President for Student Life and Dean of Students at Azusa, then introduced the Los Angeles-based Christian university's chorale. The group then performed five more songs, including a Navy hymn, the 'Battle Hymn of the Republic,' and 'Shut De Door, Keep Out De Devil.'

"I thought it was wonderful," said Roberta Feltes of Honolulu. "The harmony is unbelievable."

She described the song 'Shut De Door' as having "a local flavor to it" and mentioned that they "honored the men who have fallen" with the Navy hymn.  Feltes is also the aunt of Anthony Giannell, a church music major at Azusa who sings second tenor in the chorale.

"I think it's definitely the right choice for him. He's always been involved in church [music] and [he] wants to give back in his career."

Giannell, who will be a senior in the fall, is in his second year in the chorale. He especially appreciates the community that Azusa and the Men's Chorale offers, the beautiful campus, and the values of the school. "[They] really hold true to [the motto] 'God first,'" he said.

"This is fabulous," said Clousing. "This is the best tour ever (so far)."

"You don't get to see a harmonious men's group that often," adds Feltes. "Take the opportunity and enjoy it."
