Prior to coming to Azusa Pacific, Christine R. Guzman, MSW, LCSW, worked in community mental health in clinical and administrative roles for nine years, specializing in treating major mental illnesses. She trained and supervised social workers, and developed a training curriculum for Master of Social Work interns. While a graduate student at the University of Denver, Guzman earned a Latino Scholarship from the National Institute of Mental Health. She is a licensed clinical social worker and maintains a private practice.

As director of field education for Azusa Pacific University’s BSW program, Guzman is responsible for the recruitment, development, and oversight of diverse field internship settings. Each placement consists of professional social workers who provide training and supervision for BSW students, offering optimum experience for the development of practice skills in social work and an opportunity for students to integrate classroom learning with practice.

Service to the university at large includes diverse initiatives and projects. Guzman’s passion for the success and retention of first-generation college students instigated a desire to develop a mentorship program on campus. With the support of the Office of Student Success and Advancement, staff, and faculty allies, the First to Graduate Mentoring Program was created to provide mentoring for first-generation students.

Guzman’s ability to evaluate an environment from a systems perspective and her passion for social justice served her well in roles as a faculty fellow with the Office of Diversity (2009–10 and 2012–13).
