Fire Update - Tues., Sept. 1 September 1, 2009 Burning more than 121,700 acres, the Station Fire has become one of the two largest fires in Los Angeles County history. Currently, fire officials estimate that it may take up to two weeks to fully contain the fire. In addition, several other fires that have broken out in San Bernadino County continue to burn as well. The APU campus has not been threatened in any way, however smoke from the fire is impacting the Azusa and surrounding areas. The South Coast Air Quality Management District has issued a smoke advisory for the San Gabriel Valley due to unhealthy air quality. Incoming and Returning Students: With move-in and Orientation taking place this weekend, we encourage you to be prepared for the possibility of continued poor air quality resulting from these fires. Those with sensitivies should take precautions. In addition, the university will continue to monitor air quality and some Orientation and Athletics events may be reschuduled or relocated if necessary. APU Community: We continue to encourage the university community to take precautions to protect your health and the health of your employees and students. Supervisors, please evaluate all outdoor activity that employees and students may be engaged in and reschedule as necessary.
