Clipped Gas Line Now Secured at Crestview

Friday, June 27, 2008, 3:21 p.m.

At approximately 1:05 p.m. today, a contractor clipped a 4² gas line while working at the Crestview apartments. The contractors were removing a pole, in a carport area. While cleaning out the hole with an auger, the line was clipped.

Emergency procedures were immediately initiated by the contractor, contacting APU Campus Safety, emergency personnel, and the Gas Company. Additionally, the contractor, quickly working alongside Campus Safety, began to secure the area and evacuated approximately six buildings. Due to summer and the construction, very few tenants were on site. The area was secured by 1:15 p.m. At approximately 2 p.m., the gas line was capped.

Two weeks ago, a different contractor working at Crestview clipped a half-inch gas line with a shovel. Similar procedures were used and the safety of the residents was quickly secured. That incident enabled the contractor to update their emergency processes and assisted with the swift resolution of today's incident.

Due to the diligence of the contractors, emergency personnel, and APU's Campus Safety and university officials, the safety and security of student residents and community members were assured.
