Teachers Are Heroes
By Heidi Lynn '06

Azusa Pacific University and Jefferson Pilot Communications teamed up to honor some of the hardest working people in San Diego County—teachers. The Teachers Are Heroes Program recognizes that teachers make a difference every day in their communities. They bring hope, encouragement, and the ability to dream into the classroom, enabling students to become change agents in the world around them.

Each month, one local teacher is rewarded with a plaque, prize, and a classroom party, for personifying dedication, both to his or her students and his or her profession. At the end of the year, all selected teachers and their classes attend a private celebration, which was hosted this year on January 11, at the world famous San Diego Zoo.

Promotions for the program are aired through Jefferson Pilot Communications—four local radio stations in the San Diego area—97.3 KSON, Smooth Jazz 98.9, FM 94.9, and Radio Disney AM 1240. Community members can mail submissions to the stations, or fill them out online for a teacher they feel is deserving of the honor.

The following teachers have been honored through the Teachers Are Heroes Program: John Farrell of Diegueno Middle School; Rosalie Wisniew of St. Didacus School; Heather Rawley of Classical Academy; Stacey Smith of Vista Square Elementary; Judy Dietrich of Alpine Elementary; Michelle Smith of Tri-City Christian School; Geri Shea of The Bridge; Dale Curtis of Twin Peaks Middle School; Guy Hanford of Ramona Elementary; Eugene Fernandes of Park Dale Lane School; Eleanor Teagle of Oneonta Elementary; and Sandy Lee of Fletcher Elementary.

Throughout the year, the following faculty and staff from APU helped present awards to teachers in San Diego County: Lori A. Kildal, Ph.D., executive director of the San Diego Regional Center; Rosalyn Stolee, professor, San Diego Regional Center; Alice V. Watkins, Ph.D., dean emeritus, School of Education and Behavioral Studies; Patricia Anderson, Ph.D., former provost; and Elaine Newkirk, Board of Trustees member.
