Graduate Student Health Insurance

Graduate students may apply for health insurance at the start of each semester. This is optional for graduate domestic students but required for all full-time F-/J-1 international students. Application for insurance is required each semester or coverage is cancelled.

Information regarding fees, application, coverage, and usage may be obtained on the Graduate and Professional Center website at www.apu.edu/graduateprofessionalcenter/resources/healthinsurance. Insured graduate students may establish care with any provider of choice within the insurance network.

University health insurance is considered secondary coverage with benefits payable only to the extent that such expense is not covered by any other insurance policy (i.e., spouse, parents, individual, or group plan).

Students must present the insurance card and provide the co-pay at the time of service. The student is responsible to pay any portion of the medical bill not covered by the policy. The $100 deductible does apply and cannot be waived by the student health center.

International Student Health Insurance

All full-time international students holding an immigration document from Azusa Pacific University (I-20 or DS 2019) are required to purchase the APU health insurance during their time of study.* The APU health insurance meets the State Department’s requirement for health insurance for international students. The insurance must be purchased at the time of registration twice a year with a total of 12 months of coverage. Because this is a mandatory requirement, all F-1/J-1, degree-seeking international students with this coverage are eligible to use the APU Student Health Center for free office visits and services provided at nominal fees. For Health Center information and list of services offered, visit www.apu.edu/healthcenter. Insurance coverage terminates when student completes or terminates his/her study.

*This rule does not apply for those studying in a nonstandard term graduate program (i.e., intensive graduate programs—D.Min., Ed.D., TESOL). These students are required to have health insurance to study in the U.S. and are responsible to purchase appropriate coverage prior to arrival in the U.S. If the individual wishes to purchase the APU international health insurance, it is only available in six-month-minimum increments.
