Guadalajara is one of the principal centers of culture, economy, history, industry and religion in México, influencing the rest of the country by its culture and folklore. The birthplace of mariachi music, Guadalajara is also known as La Perla Tapatia (Pearl of the West) and Ciudad de las Rosas (City of the Roses) for its architecture and environment.

The Spanish Studies Program is co-sponsored by Azusa Pacific University and Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara, Guadalajara, Mexico. Founded in 1935, the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara is the oldest and largest private university in Mexico and hosts students from all over the world. This 9-week summer immersion program provides onsite orientation, placement with local home-stay families, guided excursions to Mexico City and Puerto Vallarta and/or Manzanillo Beach, and 3 APU classes (up to 9 units) towards a Spanish minor or major, including the following courses:

Spanish 250 Intermediate Conversation and Writing

Spanish 310 Advanced Language Practicum

Spanish 312 Civilization of Latin America

Spanish 320 Advanced Spanish Composition

Spanish 422 Survey of Latin American Literature

Spanish 431 Spanish poetry and Short Stories

Spanish 432 Literary Masters

Spanish 440 Spanish Applied Linguistics

Spanish 494 Spanish Internship

Students will gain a sensitivity and appreciation for the cultures of the Spanish-speaking world, and also develop a self-confidence and poise borne out of the mastery of the language. There will be an onsite coordinator at the university, as well as an APU-hired resident coordinator who will be present to assist students, attend excursions, and facilitate spiritual formation.

Cost: $3,285 (2 course) $4,000 (3 courses): Includes: Airfare, home-stay family (3 meals a day),
