Who can participate in Teacher Interview Day?

Interviews for the upcoming school year 2007-08 are reserved for individuals who have received or will be receiving their teaching credential from APU by July 2008 or who are eligible for a teacher intern position as determined by a Credential Analyst in the Department of Teacher Education at APU. In addition, you must be a current subscriber on APU Career Network.

For new subscribers, log on to apu-csm.symplicity.com. Select Student and Alumni Registration and complete a profile. Once you have received an approval email from Career Services you are then ready to sign up for interviews. For current subscribers, please make sure that your profile is updated with accurate information.

All eligible students will receive an invitation letter in the mail in February to participate in Teacher Interview Day. Please confirm your current address with the Department of Teacher Education.

Is it true that candidates are offered jobs at Teacher Interview Day?

Yes! Several candidates in all the credential programs were offered contracts at Teacher Interview Day 2007. However, the majority of interviews conducted were for screening purposes and the best candidates were later contacted for further interviewing at school campuses.

If a district does not have current openings, why would a district want to participate at Teacher Interview Day?

Recruiters know that openings can occur at any given time in their district and they want to be prepared to fill the position with the best candidate(s) possible. Therefore, we encourage you to participate in interviewing with a district so that you are afforded the best opportunity to be considered should an opening occur.

How do I sign up for interviews with recruiters?

Interview signups begin April 1 at 6 a.m. and end May 1 at 11:59 p.m. To sign up for interviews, you must have a résumé uploaded on your APU Career Network to include with each interview selected. To upload your résumé, simply log on to APU Career Network using your login and password. Click on Documents at the top of your profile. Next, select add new. Create a label for your document type and select browse to upload document.

Next, select Events at the top of your profile to view what interviews are available. Sign-up only for interviews for which you meet the qualifications. The following information will be matched with what the district or school is interviewing for on Teacher Interview Day. If you are signed up for an interview and you do not meet the qualification requirements, you will be removed from the interview schedule.

Graduation date: Your graduation date from a bachelor’s or master’s program must be no later than July 2008.

Graduate degree and credentials: The pull-down menu provides choices for selecting the credential and master’s degree that you have or will have by July 2008.

Credential received/will be received: You must have received or will receive by July 2008. If you are currently in an intern credential program or will be enrolled in a fall 2008 credential program, leave this field blank.

Work authorization: U.S. Citizen

Do not go through the job search feature of APU Career Network if you want to participate in Teacher Interview Day. However, you are encouraged to use this feature as another option in your job search.

If the district or school is only interviewing for single subject credentialed teachers, can I still sign up for an interview with them if I have a multiple subject credential?

We ask that you please respect the wishes of the recruiter and do not sign up for an interview. Read the qualifications for each interview carefully to make sure that your education, experience, and credentials meet the recruiter’s expectations. If the district or school is not interviewing for your particular credential, you are welcome to drop off a résumé at the information tables of the employers you are interested in for future consideration. These tables will be located upstairs in the Hall of Champions of the Felix Event Center.

What if there are no more interview slots available for the employer that I want?

If an employer’s interview schedule is full you will be placed on the standby list. If a district or school decides to interview more candidates, those on standby who meet the qualifications will be notified first by Career Services via email. Be sure to check your email daily for updates. After May 1, résumés of those still on standby will be forwarded to the districts for consideration. However, Career Services can not guarantee that those who are still on standby after May 1 will be offered a future interview. Please note that the quality of your résumé and qualifications is a critical factor in moving forward with an employer.

Can I still sign up for interviews if I miss the deadline?

Although we strongly encourage signing up for interviews in advance of Teacher Interview Day, candidates are able to sign up for remaining interview slots at the event. Advance sign-ups on APU Career Network are offered April 1 to May 1.

Where can I get assistance with my résumé?

Career Services provides several options to help you present the best quality résumé to recruiters. First, we have an online instructional guide and video on preparing an education résumé. Second, if you have 30 minutes to ensure that your résumé is top quality, résumé critique sessions will be held March 3-April 30, Monday-Thursday, 3:30-5:30 p.m. For candidates who work or live a distance from the main campus, you are welcome to have your résumé reviewed by email. Simply email your résumé to career@apu.edu and a staff member will review your résumé and return it by email. Depending on the potential volume of requests, the response time may take up to three days.

Does Career Services offer help with preparing for the interviews?

Career Services provides an online video and guide for education résumés and interviewing. In addition, we offer videotaped mock interview sessions that can be viewed in the Office of Career Services.

What do I need to bring to Teacher Interview Day?

For each interview that you have, you need to bring a résumé and a copy of your credential (or Intern Eligible Status Letter from your Credential Analyst). If you have not received your credential by May 7, bring a copy of the email document from CCTC showing that a credential has been granted. Additional items that you might be asked for include certified copies of your transcripts, CBEST, CSET, other approved subject matter exam results, and/or subject matter waiver letter. Please give yourself ample time to obtain all necessary documents prior to Teacher Interview Day.

Can non-APU students and alumni participate in Teacher Interview Day?

Interviews are reserved for APU students and alumni only. Non-APU students are welcome to drop off résumés at the employer information tables located in the Hall of Champions of the Felix Event Center.

Where else can I find teaching positions?

Teacher Interview Day is a great way to connect with employers but it is not the only option for finding a teaching position. Besides browsing current job openings on the APU Career Network, we encourage you to visit Edjoin where you can view K-12 job openings in California and post your résumé for employers. You can also find out about recruitment fairs throughout the state that you can attend. For those of you who are interested in teaching in a private, Christian school, visit www.ChristianSchoolEmployment.com.

If I am not able to interview with each district I am interested in, is it possible to leave my résumé with them for future consideration?

Yes! You are welcome to drop off a résumé at the information tables of the employers you are interested in for future consideration. These tables will be located in the Hall of Champions of the Felix Event Center.
