Should APU change its motto? A theological case will be made for an affirmative answer.
In the cultural context of civil religion and religious pluralism, the word “God” means nothing and everything outside of a particular religious community. So whatever the motto “God First” may mean to those within the APU community, it communicates no specificity to those outside. At one time, in the days of APU’s origins, the motto meant something different than it does today, because while words stay the same, their meaning does not. Of course it will be scandalous to identify who this “God” is, but that is the point. “God First” is not sufficient.
