Teams of undergraduate students from colleges and universities across the United States and throughout the world qualify for the Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl (IEB) through a system of regional bowls, such as the Ethics Bowl California Regionals. Both the regional and national bowls are sponsored by the Association for Professional and Practical Ethics (APPE).

  In the Ethics Bowl, a moderator poses questions to teams of three to five students. Questions may concern ethical problems on wide ranging topics, such as the classroom (e.g. cheating or plagiarism), personal relationships (e.g. dating or friendship), professional ethics (e.g. engineering, law, medicine), or social and political ethics (e.g. free speech, gun control, etc.) Questions are posed from the set of ethical cases given to teams prior to the competition. A panel of judges evaluates answers using the following criteria: intelligibility, focus on ethically relevant considerations, avoidance of ethical irrelevance, and deliberative thoughtfulness.
