What advice do you give to prospective students?
Have a support team. Whether that be your friends, family, a life coach, or program representative at UC, you need to have a source of encouragement as you venture on this journey to begin or complete your degree. Not only is it important to have people to encourage you throughout the process, but it’s so wonderful to share the excitement with people who care about you.

What are the distinctives of UC?
One of the most special things about UC is that you can find that support team here. The UC staff and faculty members truly care about each and every student. From our accomplished faculty members to our enrollment team and success coaches, you will find people to come alongside and do life with you. • James Berry
Program Representative for Military and Graduate Programs

    Education: M.A. in International Studies
    Contact: (626) 804-2561, jberry@uc.apu.edu

What advice do you give to prospective students?
Getting a bachelor’s or master’s degree is hard work, but it is definitely worth it! A college education is necessary for advancement in nearly any field. By pursuing your education, you are not just improving your career, you are improving yourself. The wisdom and life experience you will receive at University College will have an impact in every area in your life. My job as a program representative is to facilitate your journey towards a brighter future!

What are the distinctives of UC?
As a university with both online and face-to-face modalities, UC offers flexibility to students whose busy lives dictate a different approach to education. However, our most important distinctive, even above our flexibility, is our ethics. Many of our students have been “turned and burned” by other institutions. It is our responsibility to ensure that all of our students are cared for with the respect, dignity, and care which they deserve. The students at University College have just as much to teach us as we have to teach them.

How do you spend your free time?
I am recently married so that has taken up a considerable portion of my time lately. I enjoy reading in a variety of genres, especially history. Recently, I had the opportunity to participate on APU’s archaeological dig in Israel.

  • Alison Campbell
    Program Representative

Education: BFA in Acting for the Stage and Screen
    Contact: (626) 857-2468, acampbell@uc.apu.edu

What advice do you give to prospective students?
My advice to prospective students would be to persevere and be satisfied with the very best you can give. Never give up!

What are the distinctives of UC?
University College offers supportive staff and success coaches to make things feel more personal. It is also great because your education is convenient for you because it is centered around your time.

How do you spend your free time?
I spend my free time with friends and family, reading, and I love to go see live theater around the area.

  • Kalilah Garlington
    Program Representative

    Education: B.A. in Psychology
    Contact: (626) 857-2452, kgarlington@uc.apu.edu

What advice do you give to prospective students?
University College is a great institution to attend due to the flexibility and affordability of our programs. We offer a quality education to students who may not have the luxury of attending traditional, on-campus classes. University College offers programs in online and face-to-face formats, and many of our programs allow students to do their homework and assignments from the comfort of their home. Each program representative is very knowledgeable about the enrollment process, which helps our students enroll with confidence and take the initial steps in furthering their education.

What are the distinctives of UC?
Some of the highlights of University College are the affordable price, quality of education, and Christian worldview. Students who graduate from University College not only leave with a greater knowledge base, but they leave with a better sense of purpose and what the Lord has in store for them. It is great to know that as a program representative we are working for an institution that not only helps our students grow educationally, but spiritually and emotionally as well.

How do you spend your free time?
I typically spend my free time with my family watching movies and going out to eat. I enjoy taking good care of my new puppy and listening to music.

  • Ellen Hoffer
Senior Program Representative for Military and Graduate Programs

    Education: M.A. in Organizational Leadership
    Contact: (626) 857-2456, ehoffer@uc.apu.edu

What advice do you give to prospective students?
No question is a silly question! My job, as a senior program representative, is to assist you with the admissions process to ensure that you find the best educational fit—so ask me questions! When investigating your online educational options, make sure you write down all of your questions so you don’t forget that one really important question when talking to an institution’s program representative.

What are the distinctives of UC?
UC doesn’t just give lip service to our institutional motto of God First. When the enrollment, financial aid, and success coaching staff work with prospective and continuing students, we treat students as individuals who bear the image of our heavenly Father. I also strive to make sure that UC is the right fit for each of my students. God may be calling a student to a different degree, a different institution, a different life path, and I want to honor and respect that.

How do you spend your free time?
I love to read, and read widely, so whether it is science fiction today, a biography tomorrow, or classic literature next week, you can find me reading (I think the Kindle is one of the best inventions since sliced bread). Along with reading, I also love fellowshipping with the Lord’s people. Whether it’s playing board games or organizing and attending church functions, I surround myself with my covenant family, as Christian fellowship is one of God’s most loving means of grace.

  • Mike Hontz
    Program Representative

    Education: B.S. in Organizational Leadership
    Contact: (626) 857-2468, mhontz@uc.apu.edu

What advice do you give to prospective students?
I encourage students to have a goal or endgame in mind. If you want to gain entry into a particular vocational field, work backwards and find out what credentials employers wish to see in an ideal candidate. If you’re not sure, but know you want to complete your degree, choose a program that offers classes that are of interest to you. You never know what plans God has in store for you. And once you start, stay involved and be proactive!

What are the distinctives of UC?
University College offers students the ability to complete their college degree whereby otherwise not possible thanks to the flexible scheduling and genuine professor involvement. University College also draws upon the life experiences of each student and intertwines them with Christ-centered curriculum, creating an environment that is complete with open dialog and an education that extends beyond the “classroom.” Also, the support system is second-to-none as University College supports each student through program representives, success coaches, program completion advisors, and Student Support Central to name a few. As a graduate of one of APU's online programs, I can honestly say I would not have been able to complete my college degree in any other model. University College allowed me to be a husband, dad, and help provide for my family all while gaining a quality college education from a well-respected university.

How do you spend your free time?
My definition of free time has changed slightly as I have been blessed with a beautiful family. When I'm not role-playing, watching Frozen or playing Jake and the Never Land Pirates, I love to enjoy the outdoors, camp, swim, and hang out around the house. I love watching a good sports game on TV and I have a bad sweet tooth. I also have a dog and three chickens. Most of all, I love hanging out with my kids, and enjoying them while they still enjoy hanging out with me!

  • Jeff Martinez
    Senior Program Representative, Team Lead

    Education: B.A. in Communication
    Contact: (626) 857-2453, jmartinez@uc.apu.edu

What advice do you give to prospective students?
Don’t give up; it’s never too late to start or finish your education. Our job here at UC is to help you find your way and make sure you walk into the world with a great education and the understanding and support you need to start or restart your career.

What are the distinctives of UC?
UC offers you the chance to receive a quality, private Christian education from the comfort of your home or your local coffee shop. We have quality professors who not only care about your grades but care about you and your career. The success coaches are also unique and wonderful for our students. The ability to have a real person to talk to about any issues or needs you have as you are enrolled is beyond helpful and amazing.

How do you spend your free time?
My wife and I have two beautiful children, so we spend a lot of time with them, enjoying them before they grow up. I am also a lover of the arts; I have been involved in theater for the better part of 15 years. So when I am not here answering your questions and helping you get a better education, I am probably directing a show somewhere in town! I love the theater and will always be involved in some way, and if I’m not directing a production, I am probably seeing one. I also have a love of cooking and food, so it is also not unlikely to find me in my kitchen trying a new recipe or coming up with a new one myself.

  • Joshua McGowan
    Program Representative

    Education: B.A. in Music
    Contact: (626) 857-2436, jmcgowan@uc.apu.edu

What advice do you give to prospective students?
I would encourage prospective students to pursue something they feel passionately about. You will work harder for something you find meaning, value, and purpose in. Don't give up when you hit small bumps in the road! As your program representatives, we are here to help you maneuver any bumps or roadblocks that may arise in the enrollment process, and we are enthusiastic about helping students overcome obstacles so they can begin or resume their college education experience. Lastly, don't focus on past failures! While much can be learned from our past, today is a new day to dwell in the mercies of our loving God, who has a way of redeeming past shortcomings. If God has placed a dream in you, it is never too late to see that dream actualized, and He will provide a way to see it through to reality—just don't give up!
