To honor Veterans Day, members of the Azusa Pacific University community gathered to celebrate and remember the men and women who sacrificed for their country at the annual Veterans Day Luncheon. The Office of Alumni Relations welcomed faculty, staff, and alumni who have served in the U.S. military along with APU’s Army ROTC Cadets, for a luncheon to commemorate university veterans.
“It is amazing to be connected with APU veterans,” said junior Army ROTC Cadet Thomas Oleson. “It offers current cadets a different form of unity that we do not find elsewhere on campus. We are able to share and learn from the experiences that these men and women have had.”
Cadet Oleson, a member of the ROTC since last August, led the Presentation of Colors alongside three fellow cadets while senior Bree Barnett sang the National Anthem.
Upper Turner Campus Center transformed into a banquet hall, complete with dining tables decorated with old military photos and centerpieces made up of military “covers” or hats. More military memorabilia was displayed at the front of the room with pictures and military issued garb.
Rick Givens, director of alumni relations and reserve chaplain for the United States Air Force, hosted the event that recognized veterans from all branches of the military. He first led the guests in a rousing round of fight songs for the Marine Corps, Air Force, Navy, and Army. A slide show followed filled with pictures of current and veteran military staff, faculty, and students.
Former APU campus pastor and Air Force chaplain Lawrence Witherspoon was welcomed as the guest speaker. Witherspoon requested prayer for current soldiers as he asked the guests to simply “find someone to thank.”
