Human Resources: Serving Employees

by Estera Wieja '04

The Office of Human Resources (HR) at APU is not only about recruitment and benefits. The 11 staff members strive to provide the best resources to university staff and faculty throughout the year. This includes hosting workshops and other activities that enable employees to use their work experience as a catalyst for growth.

The Office of Human Resources exists to manage employee benefits and compensation; develop and oversee employment policy; manage staff recruitment, hiring and performance review; provide employee training and development; and oversee employee relations.

HR models their work around the philosophy that an organization is most effective if it realizes its purpose and accomplishes its goals. They strive to help departments accomplish their goals by looking at their structures, processes, people, information systems, and training needs.

Regularly throughout the year, HR organizes workshops open to all of APU. Some of the workshops focus on communication skills, while others serve as an introduction to management and leadership. Topics include “Communicating for Results,” “Effective Performance Feedback,” and “Effective Delegation.”

In October, Human Resources invited all employees to an open house and time of fellowship and understanding as they introduced new services and new staff. Several demonstration tables highlighted expanded services in employee benefits. Through this event, many faculty and staff members, as well as APU students, were able to learn more about what Human Resources is and what they do.

In November, APU faculty and staff enjoyed a health fair prepared by HR in Wilden Hall. Various health organizations presented their offers and promotions, while the staff and faculty enjoyed free massages, raffles with prizes, and free give-aways.
