APU Student Named Colombian Country Brand Ambassador

by Abigail E. Peck

Azusa Pacific University graduate assistant conductor of the APU Symphony Orchestra and Opera, Diego Barbosa-Vásquez was recently named as a Colombian Country Brand Ambassador. Reserved for Colombians who represent the positive values and essence of the country, the honor is bestowed by PROCOLOMBIA, Colombia’s Tourism, Foreign Investment, and Exports Promotions Agency. Vásquez is working toward a Master’s of Music in Conducting, with a focus on orchestra and opera. He conducts under the instruction of Christopher Russell, M.M, chair of the Department of Performing Arts.

The Bogotá, Colombia, native cultivated a love of music at a young age. From his youth he knew conducting was the path he wanted to follow. Vásquez graduated from Juan N. Corpas University as a viola major and conducting minor. He learned about APU when he attended a concert in Columbia featuring APU applied viola instructor, Jonathan Moerschel, M.M., and his quartet. Moerschel’s musical talent and passion inspired Vásquez and led to his graduate studies at APU. As assistant conductor for the APU Symphony Orchestra and Opera, Vásquez prepares the orchestra prior to the conductor’s arrival and assists with rehearsal and conducting.

Appreciative of his professors’ commitment to his academic and personal development, several serve as mentors encouraging the exploration and refinement of his craft. “From the start, my professors have invested in me wholistically encouraging me to be the best version of myself, ” said Vásquez. Upon graduating, he plans to tour internationally, representing his homeland of Columbia and Azusa Pacific University well, wherever he goes.
