Azusa Avenue Races Toward Community

On Saturday, March 29, Azusa Avenue was filled with community members, APU students, and soapbox racers as APU hosted its third annual anyon City Classic Soapbox Derby, themed ‘Racing Around the World.’

The Canyon City Classic sets the goal of providing a place for the surrounding community to create an atmosphere where families, businesses, customers, and community members can strengthen their relationship through entertainment.

The races went throughout the day according to age groups, and other activities also stretched throughout the downtown area. Local children rode ponies, jumped in bounce houses, skateboarded, and worked at a Home Depot ‘Kids Clinic.’ Volunteer Faye Donalson stated, "It’s a way to be involved in the community…its great to have something like this in Azusa."

Since the beginning of the fall 2003 semester, Azusa Pacific students and the Azusa Reads program have planned for the races, calling vendors and contractors, booking attractions, advertising at schools, and promoting the races throughout the city. The many hours of service were worth it as volunteers observed the turnout for the day. Senior Adam Barthelmess affirmed, "I look around and see the smiles on the kids’ faces and it pays off for all the hard work."
