“Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.” John 15:13

The Office of Alumni Relations invited APU veterans, reservists, National Guard, and ROTC members to a Veteran’s Day Luncheon on November 11, 2002 in the LAPC Banquet Room. “This luncheon is to honor the men and women who did not back away from defending this country’s freedom,” said Rick Givens, associate director of alumni relations. “This is our way of saying thanks.”

The luncheon included the presentation of colors by the ROTC Honor Guard from McKenna College and APU, and the singing of the National Anthem by Jaime Zavala, associate director of student activities. Guests were asked to stand and briefly introduce themselves and to include their branch of service and the years they served.

“Looking around the room gives me hope for the future,” said Mike McKean, an APU senior in the ROTC. “I look forward to hearing everybody’s stories.”

Guest speaker Michael Whyte, Ph.D., APU interim provost and LT. Colonel, USAF (Ret.) gave a message titled “We Are at War.” Whyte highlighted the importance of remembering, supporting, and praying for our military, veterans, and president.

“Veteran’s Day is a special time for me,” said Henry Sharp, project manager, who served in the U.S. Marine Corps during Vietnam. “It gives me a chance to pay tribute to all those who have gone before me. Without their sacrifices, I would not have had the opportunities that I have today.”
