Student Spotlight: Matt D'Amico '23, Art and Animation & Visual Effects

Describe a time where you felt you had found your calling in your field of study.

I have been drawing and painting for as long as I can remember. My parents would say I was a really creative kid growing up, and that I have always created stories with my art. It was my aunt, who is also an artist, who introduced me to fine art. My aunt would take me to modern art museums and set up still life objects in her backyard for me to paint. She was and still is a huge inspiration for me, and because of her my passion for art took off. It was in high school that I started taking art more seriously and thinking about it as a profession instead of just a hobby. The idea that I could make money from doing what I love was really exciting to me. I realized that I was put on this Earth to create and glorify God with my artistic abilities.

Why did you choose to study your particular major?

When looking at majors, I knew for a fact that I wanted to study and pursue art. However, with art there are so many different directions you can go with a career. As I thought about majors, I knew I wanted to study something that would help me get a job after school. I have been obsessed with Disney movies ever since I was young, and storytelling is a huge part of my art. I realized that I wanted to get into animation, because it is what I was meant to do.

Describe your APU experience thus far and how it has helped shape you into the person you are today.

APU has helped me grow artistically and spiritually. I am a part of the second class of the new animation program at APU. I have learned and grown so much as an artist. My professors challenge me to be the best artist I can possibly be and I am super thankful for the guidance I have received these past two years. The Christ-centered community on campus has really been a blessing. Being surrounded by other believers truly makes a difference. I am very thankful for all the ways APU has helped me grow.

If you could give a word of advice to future and current students, what would it be?

My biggest advice for incoming freshmen is to remember that God has big plans for you. There are going to be times throughout your college experience where you may question what you are supposed to be doing or what path to take. Remember in these moments that God is with you every step of the way, and to lean on Him always. He knows what is best for you. Another piece of advice I would give to freshmen is to have fun! College is a fun time and I encourage everyone to make the most out of the years you’re here.

Matt D’Amico is a 3rd generation APU student and is also the recipient of the prestigious Director’s Scholarship.
