Biography

Adria E. Navarro, Ph.D., LCSW, is a licensed clinical social worker with expertise in long-term supports and services for older adults experiencing functional challenges. She teaches health-related course content as it informs practice, theory, policy, and research in APU’s MSW program. Her research has focused on elder justice, including studies that aim to optimize community practice, clinical interventions, and supportive environments for vulnerable older adults living in the community. She collaborates with colleagues from USC’s schools of gerontology and medicine, with activity such as being a co-investigator on studies focused on the response to elder mistreatment. Prior to academia, she practiced in health settings for more than 25 years. Following fellowship in the University of California, San Francisco’s Program for Interprofessional Practice and Education, she focused on interprofessional assessments for vulnerable adults with impaired decision-making capacity. Her passion is to honor each person’s autonomy—balanced, when needed, with protection. She has been a social worker in hospitals, managed care, inpatient psychiatry, adult day health care, and academic institutions. Navarro’s national memberships include the National Association of Social Workers, The Gerontological Society of America, and the National Adult Protective Services Association. She values membership with the Pasadena Village and California Elder Justice Coalition.
