Tona Wilson, Ph.D., joined the Azusa Pacific University faculty in fall 2017 as an assistant professor and coordinator for the Physical Education Teacher Education program. Prior to joining APU, Wilson was a physical education teacher, sports medicine instructor, first responder for athletic teams, and coach in the San Diego Unified School District for 20 years. She taught K-12 physical education as well as PE for special needs, adaptive PE, and dance. Wilson has taught in underserved schools and disadvantaged communities for most of her career, and her enthusiasm and passion for inspiring the youth of today has helped make a difference in the lives of many students and their families. She was instrumental in designing and implementing no-cost, community-based workout programs at her high school facility for the students, staff, and surrounding community, and her master’s and doctoral research explored the relationships between student physical fitness and academic achievement in the district in which she taught. She trains and coaches nutrition clients, fitness clients, and athletes, and teaches indoor cycling. She is a former competitor in figure and fitness competitions, sprint triathlons, Spartan Races, and Tough Mudders. As a mountain biking enthusiast, snowboarder, and skier, she loves riding the San Gabriel Valley and at Big Bear.
