Senior Illustration Exhibition by Sarah Demonteverde

"Handumanan" is a Visayan term meaning "a keepsake" or remembrance. In naming and producing work for my senior art show, I have drawn inspiration from my travels with my family in the hometown of my parents, and grandparents (in the Central Visayas of the Philippines). Being Filipino-American is just a portion of my identity, and yet I wanted to share the joy I found, as I reflected on the moments my family shared in a place so foreign, yet close to home. I wanted to examine how beauty resides, even in the most mundane and unexpected of places; how a people could be so resilient, and yet so content with life's simple pleasures that we often take for granted.

This joy, is my keepsake
