First-generation (FG) students at APU have unique stories and journeys to share with our campus community. With a panel of current FG students and faculty, we discuss the APU experience through their eyes and highlight the importance of a campus support system to help them succeed. A 2011 study conducted by the Stanford University School of Education found that FG students who used mentoring and coaching services were 10-15 percent more likely to go on to another year of college. It’s time to start the conversation about how, as faculty and staff, we can help our first-generation students through mentoring and campus-wide support.
