Evidence-Based Approaches for Enhancing Diversity and Inclusion in the UG Research Experience

Wednesday, April 1, 2020, 55:50 p.m.

Undergraduate research experience is identified as a high-impact practice, but underrepresented students often do not pursue engagement in this positive learning opportunity. Ethnic minority, first-generation, and low-income undergraduates have indicated feelings of being unwelcomed, intimidated, invisible, and isolated on college campuses, and these feelings often hinder undergraduates from accessing faculty-mentored research projects. This session explores the benefits of using evidence-based approaches for enhancing diversity and inclusion within the purview of research, scholarship, and creative arts. Invited faculty-student dyads discuss challenges and opportunities, along with strategies the university is using to support and promote diversity and inclusion.
