Biography

André Harmse teaches a wide array of courses for both math majors and non math majors at various levels. He enjoys helping students explore and understand the applications and use of mathematics and statistics in real life through class assignments and service projects. At APU, he has worked with colleagues and students on research in combinatorial matrix theory.

Dr. Harmse studied enumerative combinatorics and completed his dissertation on permutation patterns at UC San Diego. While completing his doctorate at UC San Diego, he also taught mathematics part-time at Mesa Community College, including courses in discrete math, calculus, and linear algebra.

Dr. Harmse is an avid swimmer with the Competitive Tri-Swim Masters swim team in Covina. His hobbies also include bicycling and running, and the occasional triathalon. He enjoys spending time with his wife and little girl—exploring the outdoors, reading and cooking.
