Dean's Desk (September 2017)

    By Jennifer E. Walsh, Ph.D.

Happy new (academic) year! After months of hibernation, the campus is alive with new students, new faculty and staff, new programs, and new initiatives. We can't wait to fill you in!

Already, the calendar is already packed with special events, including this weekend's Fall Research Day, and upcoming lectures and conferences commemorating significant historical events. In addition, we have a very special guest speaker, Dr. Ting Wu, visiting campus on October 5th to discuss a new gene editing technology (CRISR) that has prompted much conversation between scientists and ethicists. We hope you can join us for this important discussion.

In addition, we are also pleased to have one of our own, Tiffany (Porter) Moore '06, featured at this year's Dinner Rally, a scholarship fundraising event happening on Friday, October 20th. Also for Homecoming, we'll once again be hosting a "Come Back to CLAS" event on Saturday, October 21st, with faculty presentations, a robotics demonstration, a book signing event, food, fun, and more. Childcare for the little ones is provided, so please plan to stop by!

On a more sobering note, I know that many of you have been impacted by the devastation wrought by Hurricanes Harvey and Irma. Please know that our Center for Student Action teams are working with alumni in Texas and Florida to learn how we can assist in the recovery and rebuilding efforts, and we will pass along updates in the October newsletter. In addition, if you have specific agencies or aid efforts that you would like to share with your fellow alumni, please let us know by emailing and we'll feature those as well.

Warm regards,

Jennifer E. Walsh, Ph.D.
Dean, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
