September's Featured Alumna: Micayla Brewster B.A. '17

Written by Regina Ender

It’s APU alumna Micayla Brewster’s career and passion to bridge this gap between the stage and the audience. As the Associate Account Manager at Marathon Digital in New York City, Brewster runs social media accounts and spearheads major marketing efforts for popular musicals and plays.

Most notably, Brewster oversaw digital marketing for the hit Broadway musical “Hamilton.” During her internship, she ran the “Hamilton” Snapchat account for the 2016 Tony Awards After Party and for the special Ham4Ham audience engagement shows. Now, as a full-time employee, she oversees the content calendar, organizes strategic social media campaigns, and is a videographer during special events. Additionally, she works on the team who created the HamApp, an app specifically made for the musical that allows fans to enter the ticket lottery, answer trivia, and use specialty camera filters and customized stickers. In her role, she coordinates promotional campaigns, strategizes ways to increase the number of people who download it, and suggests technological updates as the app increases in popularity. Aside from her work for Hamilton, Brewster also runs social media for a number of other productions, including “Head Over Heels,” a musical featuring music from The Go-Go's, and the Broadway-bound musical “Be More Chill” based on the novel by Ned Vizzini.

The summer before her senior year at APU, Brewster was an intern at both Marathon Digital and theSkimm, a media company that delivers an easily-digestible newsletter with the daily news. As an intern, she worked on several public relations efforts, gave input on how to activate and engage their network of brand ambassadors, and contributed to the brand’s Snapchat. Because of her dedication to the brand, she also won the company’s School of Skimm and the Skimm Ahead Launch competitions. Brewster also worked as an intern for Paramount Pictures in their In-Theatre Marketing Department. There, she honed her skills and ability to adapt her writing for different brands, tracked social media coverage of films, pitched marketing campaigns for movies, designed graphics, and evaluated trends in the movie industry. As a senior, Brewster was appointed as the Account Director in APU’s Public Relations Agency and successfully led major external project lead a campaign for the Christian Women in Media Association.

Brewster graduated from APU with her B.A. in Communications Studies and a minor in Public Relations. She hopes to continue to make her career in the media and entertainment world and is actively pursuing connections with other Christians in the NYC media and entertainment industry.

Words of Wisdom: “Between internships, class projects, and other on-campus opportunities, find ways to take the things that you’re learning in class and ground them in tangible experiences that you can speak to in interviews.”
