Why This Major Is Relevant
Over the next several decades, our world will face significant challenges. Climate change, acid rain, ozone depletion, and other chemical changes in our environment will require professionals who understand the forces at play and wish to make a difference. APU’s chemistry major uniquely prepares graduates to discover solutions for these types of problems.
Also, chemistry is often called the “central science” because it is necessary to understand it in order to study in the fields of biology, astronomy, earth science, and physics. Chemistry is also fundamental to interdisciplinary fields such as biochemistry, ecology, medicine, pharmacology, and environmental toxicology. As a result, chemistry majors are prepared for a wide variety of jobs and can pursue a broad range of interests.
This program is a component of the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) disciplines, one of the fastest-growing areas of the economy. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a 13 percent increase in STEM employment from 2012-22, reflecting the consistent need for training in the sciences.
Gain In-depth Learning Experiences
In addition to classroom requirements, chemistry majors have the opportunity to complete a special research project during their junior or senior year. This may involve collaboration alongside a faculty member, an off-campus internship in industry, or a project in which students pursue one of their own ideas. This experience allows students to put classroom learning into practice and ensures that they leave APU with proof of their skills and experience on their résumés.
