Athletics (Fall 2020)
Due to the concerns arising from all the challenges surrounding COVID-19, the PacWest Executive Board voted unanimously to postpone intercollegiate competition in PacWest fall sports until after January 1, 2021. PacWest fall sports include men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, and women’s volleyball. The action was taken due to rapidly changing information and guidelines from the NCAA, as well as the states, counties, and areas where the 11 PacWest institutions compete.
In addition to the PacWest cancellation of fall sports, The Great Northwest Athletic Conference’s CEO Board announced July 17 that it is suspending all GNAC intercollegiate athletics competition through November 30 due to COVID-19, following a unanimous vote. The CEO Board will continue to monitor and evaluate developments related to the pandemic, and it will make a decision by October 15 regarding the status of competition after November 30.
The decision to suspend play affects Azusa Pacific football, which is a member of the four-team GNAC. The suspension of play precludes contests of any kind against outside competition, regardless of whether a sport is in the championship or non-championship segment of its playing calendar. Azusa Pacific will have institutional autonomy regarding organized practice activities, according to the CEO Board.
PacWest and GNAC are currently in discussions regarding possible intercollegiate schedules that may allow all APU sports to compete during the spring semester. We will communicate details at athletics.apu.edu as they emerge throughout the fall.
