J. Christopher Jennings, JD

Chris Jennings was appointed general counsel of Azusa Pacific University in September 2016. He joined Azusa Pacific in 2011 as the associate general counsel. He is also an adjunct professor in APU’s Department of History and Political Science.
Prior to joining APU, Jennings practiced law at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP in Los Angeles for eight years, representing major multinational corporations and partnerships in a wide variety of industries. While in private practice, he specialized in antitrust, securities, and legal malpractice defense and gained experience at all levels of federal and California courts. He began his legal career clerking for the Honorable Nathaniel M. Gorton in the United States District Court in Massachusetts.
Jennings earned a B.A. in History and Political Science from APU in 1996, and a JD from Boston University School of Law in 2002. He lives in Pasadena with his wife, Sara (Finley ’98), and their three children. He is a member of Lake Avenue Church in Pasadena and serves on the board of directors for several charitable organizations, including Hillsides in Pasadena.

Jim Buckley joined Azusa Pacific in 2020 as the associate general counsel. Prior to joining APU, Buckley spent seven years as an operations and management consultant for law departments and law firms, including three years with an international consulting firm. He began his law practice in the litigation department at Gibson Dunn in Los Angeles, with extensive additional experience in compliance and rotations in the firm’s corporate and labor departments. This was followed by 20 years as senior in-house counsel with Lockheed Martin Corporation, with a continuing focus on litigation, compliance, contracts, and legal operations. He is admitted to practice in California, and to all levels of the corresponding federal courts.
Buckley holds a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Rochester and a JD from the University of Southern California, and is pursuing an M.A. in Biblical Studies from The Master’s University. He has been a member of Calvary Community Church in Westlake Village, California, for 30 years. He and his wife, Karen, have four children and three grandchildren, and recently relocated to Azusa.
