Azusa resident Vannessa Weber, assistant director of Military and Veteran Education Benefits (MVEB) at Azusa Pacific University, received the Diana Davis Award for Excellence at the recent Western Association of Veterans Education Specialists conference. The award honors Weber’s commitment to serving APU’s 500 veteran and active-duty military students and their families.
“It means so much to be recognized for my passion to serve military-connected students,” said Weber. “I could not have received this award without the dedication of my entire team.”
Weber was nominated for the award by one of APU's former veteran students and current staff members. “Vannessa exemplifies God-honoring service on a daily basis to all of our military-connected students and we are so very proud that she was recognized for this service by her peers at the national conference,” said Heather Petridis, Ph.D., vice president of enrollment management.
During her five years of service with MVEB, Weber has partnered with military-connected students as they advance through their educational journey. As a student in the Master's in Research Psychology and Data Analysis at APU, Weber’s understanding of military and veteran students across the country deepened while she researched their adjustment to campus life and discovered trends of marginalization. As a military spouse to a veteran APU student, this cause is close to Weber’s heart.
“Entering higher education as a military member or veteran can be a challenge for many as they adjust to college life,” said Weber. “APU strives to relate to our military-connected students, pray with them, provide resources, and advocate for their financial benefits.”
Azusa Pacific University’s Office of MVEB helps military-connected students understand, maximize, and utilize their education benefits, including VA benefits, TA benefits, and ROTC scholarships. In addition, as a certified Yellow Ribbon school, Azusa Pacific partners with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to offer additional funding to cover tuition for eligible veterans.
“It is so rewarding to see countless students return to my office, after successfully integrating into college life at APU, thriving on campus and succeeding in their classes,” said Weber. “I am so grateful to be a part of their story.”
