Biography

Catherine Hackworth is an Australian native and received critical acclaim when she recently performed the multi-role of the Mistress in the scandalous modern opera Powder Her Face with Long Beach Opera. Roles with Los Angeles Opera include Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni, Giannetta in L’elisir D’amore, opposite Ruth Ann Swenson, Yvette in La Rondine, Frasquita in Carmen, opposite Jennifer Larmore and Placido Domingo, the Dew Fairy in Hänsel ünd Gretel and Annina in La Traviata, opposite and covering Carol Vaness.

Roles covered with the company include Gilda, Giulietta, Nannetta, and Sophie in Werther. With San Diego Opera, she sung Kate Pinkerton, Barbarina, and covered and rehearsed Susanna in Le Nozze di Figaro. Notable orchestral engagements include Gretel in Hänsel ünd Gretel with Los Angeles Philharmonic, Puccini repertoire with California Philharmonic, the San Diego Chamber Orchestra, Sydney Symphony, and London National Orchestra in such repertoire as Handel’s Messiah, Orff’s Carmina Burana, Beethoven’s Ninth and Fauré’s Requiem.

Credentials/Certifications

  • Catherine Hackworth is a previous recipient of the prestigious Royal Opera House Covent Garden scholarship to study at the National Opera Studio in London. She was a national finalist in the Loren L. Zachary Competition and a three-times regional finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council auditions.
