Biography

My clinical expertise is psychiatric mental health nursing. My population of interest for research is adolescents and young adults, specifically pertaining to adolescents and young adults living and exiting foster care, respectively. In collaboration with Los Angeles Department of Children and Family Services, findings from my research on mentoring needs of adolescents in foster care led the Department to implement workforce and education strategies for preparing transition-age youth in exiting the foster system. I also have conducted research on substance abuse among homeless youth, and I have published data on the importance of HIV testing as health promotion issue. In addition, as a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner, I am interested in psychological influences on alcohol and drug addiction, versus the more widely-accepted theory of drug addiction as a "brain disease," on health outcomes. Many of those living in our homeless communities suffer from addiction, which primarily is a response to meaningful emotional stressors in life and not simply due to a spurt of dopamine. In 2009, I was designated a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Nurse Faculty Scholar, which enabled me to become a nurse leader and enhanced my scholarly contributions to health outcomes among vulnerable populations of foster youth and homeless youth. I continue to seek grant funding in this area.
