The primary focus area of my work at Azusa Pacific University is in developing students for clinical practice. I began as an adjunct faculty member in 2010 instructing final semester students in the NP programs while at the same time visiting students at their clinical sites to ascertain their actual practice skill. Within two years I joined the team as a full time faculty member. My contributions beyond didactic and clinic visits are aimed at strengthening student skill and confidence as nurse practitioners. Students view my video set as they prepare for head to toe exam testing required in all NP programs at APU.
I researched and implemented the use of standardized patients and focused scenarios to use as formative and assessment tools in my clinical courses as pilot programs. To date all clinical courses in the MSN NP programs have implemented this strategy as a best practice for nursing education. My work in primary care and specialty GI practice allows me to provide real-life examples in lecture and to draw new case scenarios to educate students via use of standardized patients. As an RN my past work in ophthalmic surgery enables me to contribute to skills day workshops for our final semester students as they enjoy practicing common office procedures. These hands on sessions are a favorite of students. In addition to specific course involvement my contribution to the MSN program at Azusa Pacific University includes membership on University Curriculum committees and Nursing Research and Simulation committees. Mentoring new hire instructors each semester allows me to lend consistency to the instruction our students receive at each semester level.
