Katherine Tong brings over 30 years of combined experiences as a Registered Nurse (RN), board certified family nurse practitioner(CFNP), and educator. She has taught courses in Community and Urban Health, Case Management, Health Assessment, including writing courses. Dr. Tong serves as the Department Chair of the RN to BSN Program.
She keeps her skills current by seeing pediatric and women’s health patients. Dr. Tong loves to bring her experiences to students to enhance their learning in class. “If you can put into practice what you are saying to students, it validates what you are teaching.”
Dr. Tong's dissertation focused on Health Promotion and Health Literacy among Samoans. In February 2013, she co-developed and co-led two sessions of the training, “Health Literacy” conducted for the Orange County Health Care Agency on behalf of the California-Nevada Public Health Training Center.
In July 2015, Dr. Tong and other researchers were awarded a grant with the National Institute of Minority Health and Health Disparities for their project entitled INSPIRE: INdigenous Samoan Program to Initiate Research Excellence. Her future research will continue to focus on health literacy and health promotion behaviors in vulnerable populations.
