Sample Curriculum and Timeline

Week 1: School Orientation and Observation

APU mentors will meet the principal, who will lead an orientation about the school site.

Mentors will also visit the fourth-grade classrooms where they may be asked to introduce themselves, observe, and/or participate in the class by helping as aides.

Week 2: Building Rapport

APU mentors will meet with their fourth-grade teams for the first time. They will establish team expectations to guide student behavior, learn about the backgrounds and interests of their students, and assess students’ prior knowledge of college.

Week 3: College Life

Students will brainstorm colleges that they have heard of, explore reasons why people go to college, and discuss four main aspects of college life: classes, residence life, student life, and athletics.

Week 4: APU Visit Day

There will be no school site visit on this day. Instead, the fourth-grade students will come to APU to tour the campus.

Additional details about the tour schedule and responsibilities will be provided as the day approaches.

Week 5: Career Exploration

Students will brainstorm different careers and complete a career Interest Survey to explore their personal career interests.

Week 6: College Majors

Students will distinguish between a career and a major. They will also match different careers with appropriate college majors and identify a major that aligns with their personal career choice.

Week 7: College Costs and Application

Students will explore the costs associated with attending college (tuition and fees, room and board, books and supplies, etc.). They will also explore four financial aid options (scholarships, grants, work study, and loans). Lastly, students will complete a mock college application.

Week 8: Final Visit

APU mentors will meet with their fourth-grade teams for the last time. Students will reflect on what they have learned about college, receive advice from their mentor about how to best prepare for college, and play a fun game to close out their time together.


The C.H.A.M.P. Graduation will take place at 6:30 p.m. in the Felix Event Center on West Campus. APU mentors should arrive by 6 p.m.
