Q & A with Bethany

How has APU transformed you?
Wow, this question is hard to answer because there are so many different ways that I have been impacted and shaped because of APU. Overall, I got the chance to meet so many people who were totally different from me, and I don’t think I would have met them if it weren’t for APU. Those people are still shaping and transforming my life to this day, and I am so thankful to have had the opportunity to get to know such a diverse group of people that I know will be in my life forever. APU has also provided a space for me to grow and develop my faith in California and out of the country, while simultaneously learning from and leading others. Also, my dad is a Navy chaplain, so I see the world through a unique lens, since I am a military and pastor’s kid. This aspect of my life has been a huge part of my experiences in and out of the Church, and APU has allowed me to meet others who have completely different backgrounds and family dynamics, which has helped me expand my perspective and serve others with greater care and compassion.
Which activities at APU have you most enjoyed being a part of?
I got to lead teams to Mexico and Ecuador, as well as travel and tour in France and Germany with my choir. I also had the opportunity to be a worship leader my senior year for chapel, which was such a unique opportunity since we all participated together as a diverse body of students, friends, and peers. I also got to work on campus all four years and develop close relationships throughout campus. Overall, I made the best friends I have ever had—and each of them has individually and uniquely shaped me for the better.
What advice would you give to prospective students?
Remember that YOU CAN DO THIS! I think, in our generation and culture today, so many people emphasize the standards and “what it takes.” Although those aspects of life and success are important, I think we all need to grow in giving ourselves grace, by realizing that the Lord loves us the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow, regardless of our actions or accomplishments!
How do you spend your free time?
You will usually find me at the beach, playing volleyball or spikeball, playing a fun board game with friends, or trying some new food. I also love exploring and visiting national parks—everyone should go to Zion! It’s my favorite!
