Q & A with Collin
How has APU transformed you?
Oh, wow, where to start? I didn’t begin my undergraduate career at Azusa Pacific, but I firmly believe my decision to transfer here in the fall of 2013 was at the prompting of the Lord. Growing up in the public school system, I was never really exposed to the study of Scripture in an academic setting, and having the opportunity to engage the Word and examine its complexities has helped me tremendously in my walk with Christ. My professors simultaneously poured into me and challenged my worldview, causing me to really think about what I believe and why. Outside of academics, I was a member of the men’s soccer team and met some incredible men who have influenced me greatly. After some time away, to say that I am happy to be back at Azusa Pacific in this role is an understatement.
Which activities at APU have you most enjoyed being a part of?
Serving with Mexico Outreach was one of the highlights. Just one of the many great things about APU is that there is literally always something going on around campus. While participating on the men’s soccer team took a large part of my time, I loved attending the various events planned by the Office of Communiversity (now the Office of Campus Life). A memory I will always cherish was serving in Mexico Outreach over Thanksgiving 2013, where a group of friends and I were able to put together a Vacation Bible School for the local youth, as well as provide them with donated soccer balls and jerseys. And I can’t forget about The ZU!
What advice would you give to prospective students?
“Rejoice in the Lord always! I say it again: Rejoice!” (Philippians 4:4, CCB). The apostle Paul nails it there. In this crazy season of figuring out where you’re going to be spending your college years, my encouragement would be to celebrate the moments of disappointment in the same fervor as the moments of joy. Hold on to the truth that the Lord has got it all figured out, and He’s never going to let you down!
How do you spend your free time?
Although I could always use a solid “couch day,” I really just like to stay active in my free time. I’m blessed to have competed in multiple triathlons in the past few years, and the training for those events has become very therapeutic for me! I hope to continue participating in these events as the years go on, because at least I’ll have an excuse to attempt to stay in shape, right?
