Q & A with Angelica

How has APU transformed you?

Studying psychology and Spanish at APU allowed me to deepen my understanding of the value of human beings as individuals who are imprinted with God’s image and designed with intentionality and purpose. I learned that no one is too broken to be reached by God’s grace and that through His creation and history, God reveals time and again how complex and intricate we each are.

Which activities at APU have you most enjoyed being a part of?

One of my favorite perks of working at APU is getting to interact with students from all over the world. During my time at APU, I have participated in our American International Mentoring (AIM) program, which seeks to create awareness of our international students on campus by matching them with an American peer who prays for and mentors them during weekly check-ins and monthly events. Thanks to this program, I have been able to develop some of the most beautiful friendships with students from all sorts of cultures and backgrounds.

What advice would you give to prospective students?

Learn to set boundaries early on. Whether it is in relationships, classes, friendships, or any other area of your life, boundaries are essential. There will be times where you’ll have to say no to a Friday-night dinner so that you can study for an exam, or there will be moments when saying, “Let me take some time to think about that” will be difficult but necessary for your own mental health. There is no shame in learning what your personal capacity is and adjusting the areas of your life accordingly. Exercising autonomy over your choices will become crucial in college, so you’ll want to learn to prioritize what is most important pretty soon.

How do you spend your free time?

I love spending time with my family, surrounded by Cuban food and really loud salsa music. Additionally, I really enjoy crocheting in my free time and just doing creative things in general.
