Race-ing Toward the Cross: Seeking Wisdom in an Era of "Black Lives Matter"

Sandra Richards-Mayo, PhD., Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, School of Education Program Director, Doctor of Educational Leadership, Associate Professor, Department of Educational Leadership

In order to talk productively about race, we must better understand what it is and how it operates in our lives. This workshop will explore the historical basis of race and its contemporary significance in institutional arrangements and interpersonal interactions. Through a series of reflective prompts and experiential exercises, participants will make sense of race in an era that has been paradoxically described as both post-racial—with the two-time election of President Obama—and decisively racialized—with recent racially motivated killings and the birth of what some are calling a new civil rights movement. In addition to providing practical strategies for talking about race in the classroom and other settings, this workshop will challenge participants to continue to seek racial understanding and reconciliation in cruciform community.
