Getting Experience

The Department of Biology and Chemistry does not require that students go through a training internship as part of their academic requirement. However, we strongly encourage students to consider an internship or a research project as part of their undergraduate education. There are many opportunities available–you only need to find one that you’re interested in and take the initiative to get the position.

For students wishing to pursue a post-graduate degree in the health field (e.g., physical therapy, physician’s assistance, dentistry, medicine, etc.), experience in a hospital or clinical setting is extremely important. The experience may be paid or volunteer. View a partial list of health volunteer opportunities in the Los Angeles area.

For those wishing to pursue master’s or doctoral degrees in the sciences, research experience is also very important. Check out APU’s summer research program. Additionally, you may be able to be involved in a directed research project during the academic year for credit. Contact individual faculty members if you are interested in this.
