Vocal Jazz Ensemble
APU’s Vocal Jazz Ensemble is an audition-based vocal ensemble in the School of Music. The ensemble includes 10-12 talented singers, a rhythm section, and horns. This ensemble performs a wide variety of vocal jazz literature, both classic and contemporary, and is available to perform for special private events in Los Angeles County. In addition to their fall and spring performances each year, the APU Vocal Jazz Ensemble is honored to appear annually in the Battle of the Big Bands concert featuring both APU’s Jazz Ensemble and Citrus College’s Blue Note Orchestra. The Vocal Jazz Ensemble also appears regularly at schools, civic organizations, and other local concert events. The ensemble is under the direction of Rod Cathey, DMA, who has spent the majority of his APU career conducting choral groups. Cathey has also conducted Men’s Chorale, University Choir and Orchestra, and Oratorio Choir.

With more than 25 years of small group music ministry history, APU’s School of Music is proud to present its newest vocal ensemble, Driven. This select group of talented young people, under the direction of faculty member Galen Clark, is made up of students who desire to serve the Lord and share the Gospel message through music and personal testimony.
This unique ensemble represents a diverse spectrum of students, majoring in many different areas of study, all desiring to praise God and lead their fellow brothers and sisters in worship. Driven most recently completed a major musical tour through the Pacific Northwest, covering more than 2,500 miles and ministering in churches, schools, and civic organizations. Driven performs a wide variety of music ranging from great arrangements of classic hymns to contemporary choruses, and from a cappella spirituals to the great gospel music favorites. They perform regularly for local community events in the San Gabriel Valley and they minister on a bi-weekly basis in the greater Southern California region.
CDs are available through the School of Music for many of these ensembles.
