Online Courses: online.apu.edu

APU offers two fully online programs: the Master of Arts in Education: School Librarianship and the Master of Arts in Educational Technology. Other individual online classes are offered that can be taken as part of traditional face-to-face graduate programs. For information, contact (626) 815-5038.

What Is An Online Course?

Online courses have the same content as face-to-face courses. They are taught by fully qualified APU faculty who teach traditional courses. There is usually no scheduled meeting time or classroom to visit on a regular basis. Material presentations and class discussions are all done online through the World Wide Web. These are not correspondence courses between an instructor and one student, but a full class of students who interact with each other as well as with the instructor through weekly activities.

Who Should Take An Online Course?

Most students who take online classes do so for convenience when balancing work schedules and course availability. This environment allows students who normally could not attend a campus program to participate in an exciting online version of traditional face-to-face classes. Learning comes from interaction with content material, the instructor, and other students in the class. Students who do well typically are those who are self-motivated and disciplined. There are weekly due dates for participation and assignments just as in any traditional class. This is not a self- paced, “whenever I can get to it” program. This is an exciting new way of becoming a life-long learner where the responsibility for learning is shared by the student and instructor.

Please Note: First, you must register for your online course through the Graduate Center. You must supply a valid email address. Once you are officially registered, you should follow the directions below.

To login to your class:
Classes will not be open for you to login to until the day the term begins. Please check the date if you are having trouble logging into the course site. You now have two options for how you can login:

  1. Go to den.apu.edu and use your APU Net ID login information. Once in Cougars’ Den, locate the “Online APU” link under “My Classes.” Click “Online APU” and you will be taken into your online.apu.edu homepage.
  2. Follow the directions listed below to login at the online.apu.edu site with your student ID number and your first name as your password.

Online you will need to:

  1. Technical check – This helps you to check out your computer to be sure it is compatible with the online environment. See http://online.apu.edu/index.real?action=Technical for the current Technical Requirements for online classes.
  2. Login with your APU Student ID number, including the dashes, your password, and your first name, with the first letter capitalized. If you have taken an online class before, your password remains the same as your previous course.
  3. Once in the system, immediately go to the tab “User Profile,” change your password and update your email address, if necessary.
  4. Orientation class – This is a class that will help you become familiar with the environment and be ready to go when your class begins.

  1. First things first, under “Location” or “Address” type the address (also known as URL) online.apu.edu and press enter. You may want to create a bookmark of this address for easy access in the future. Simply click on “Bookmarks” or “Favorites” on your menu bar and select “Add.”
  2. Before beginning the course, you need to make sure your computer and Internet browser are ready to support all the programs you will use in your class. On the left side-bar, click on “Technical Information” to check your computer systems.
  3. “Student Services” (on the menu bar, on the left of your screen) will allow you to access information regarding academic advising, the library, and the campus bookstore. You can order your books for any of the online courses by calling (800) 933-1950 or by going to the Azusa Campus Bookstore.
  4. “Academic Information” (on the menu bar) lets you find out about the degrees offered at APU, general policies, and the academic calendar.
  5. “Financial Information” (on the menu bar) gives you a breakdown of costs by units, programs, and fees. From here, you can also contact APU Student Financial Services to apply for financial aid.
  6. “Course Schedule” (on the menu bar) will allow you to access information regarding classes being offered by the various departments during each term. Simply select the program and term you are interested in and a menu will appear showing you which classes are offered. Click on the class to find out who the instructor is and to see a short description of the class.
  7. You may now click on “Login,” after having completed the most important part - the technical check. Enter your APU Student ID, your password, and click on“Go to Class.”
  8. Welcome to your online class! On your screen you will see the class you have registered for as well as some instructional aid courses for you to work through to get a clear understanding of how to work in your online course.
  9. Before you enter into your course, you will need to go to the brown tab at the top of the page called “User Profile.” This is where you will change your password. Also check to make sure the email address showing is your current email address. If it is not, or if you change it during the term, please update it here immediately.
  10. Next, please go to the “Future Library/Orientation Course Student’s Library” area for further directions on the online class environment. Click on the links to view the welcome (either video or audio) and navigate through the online course guide by clicking on the title of the unit, or the readings and discussions associated with each unit. Your online course homepage will look basically the same as this course, and taking a few minutes to work through the Orientation Course will allow you to navigate your own course with more confidence and familiarity.
  11. You will always see a menu bar of Homepage options, listing Azusa Pacific University, your name (for your homepage), and the course number for any course at which you may be looking. Before getting into your class, on your homepage you will see a list of tabs to choose from that will allow you to check on payment plans, books needed for courses, add or drop a class, change your password, or email the help desk regarding any technical difficulties. You will also see the administrative message center where emails will be posted to you regarding eCollege and the online campus. Below the Message Center you will find your Enrolled Courses, the navigational courses offered by eCollege to help you get familiar with the program, and your online course through APU. Click on the title of the course you are ready to jump into, and good luck!

If you are having technical problems, you can email the help desk 24 hours a day, seven days a week at: helpdesk@online.apu.edu
