Mission Development Opportunities

Every three years since 1946, InterVarsity sponsors Urbana, a conference specifically designed to provide a place for college students to see, hear, and respond to God’s global mission. Students learn about critical global issues from dynamic teachers, worship with thousands in one of the most diverse gatherings in North America, and hear mission minded speakers, students, and recent graduates testify to God’s faithfulness to the ends of the earth. More than 200,000 students have already been challenged and impacted, and the number continues to grow with each conference.

In 2009, more than 90 APU students, faculty, staff, and alumni attended the conference in St. Louis, Missouri. Fundraising and scholarships were provided through a need-based application process. We look forward to Urbana 2012. If interested in attending, sign up on the communication list through the Office of World Missions. It takes both the Spring 2012 and Fall 2012 semesters to prepare for the registration and travel.

Lausanne, the International Congress on World Evangelization, was first held in Lausanne, Switzerland in 1974. This gathering was called by a committee led by Reverend Billy Graham and drew more than 2,300 evangelical leaders from 150 countries. They participated in Bible studies, discussions, and debates over theology, strategy, and methods of evangelism. The gathering produced The Lausanne Covenant, a declaration that is “intended to define the necessity, responsibilities, and goals of spreading the Gospel.” Since 1974, two more conferences have take place, one in 1989 in Manila, Philippines, and the other in 2010 in Cape Town, South Africa.
