Department of Biology and Chemistry

Welcome to the Department of Biology and Chemistry

At the Department of Biology and Chemistry, we explore the foundations of life and the physical world — from molecular interactions and organismal physiology to entire ecosystems. Our programs are designed to help you build a strong academic and practical foundation in biological, chemical, or allied health sciences.

As a student here, you’ll gain valuable hands-on laboratory experience, sharpen your critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and learn how to apply science in service to others and the broader world. Whether you're passionate about research, healthcare, biotechnology, conservation, forensics, teaching, or other science-based careers, we’ll prepare you to pursue your calling with confidence and purpose.

We offer a variety of undergraduate and graduate pathways to match your goals:

We also provide tailored advising and course planning for students pursuing careers in medicine, dentistry, veterinary science, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and other healthcare professions through our Pre-Professional Studies pathway.

We’re committed to providing a learning environment that fosters academic excellence, meaningful mentorship, and a strong sense of community. Our faculty walk alongside you — not only as educators, but also as mentors who encourage you to ask thoughtful questions about God’s interconnected creation. Every semester, students benefit from one-on-one academic advising with Biology and Chemistry faculty, ensuring personalized guidance throughout your academic journey.

Our department is housed in the LEED Gold-certified Segerstrom Science Center on West Campus. This modern facility features:

  • A large lecture hall and flexible classroom spaces

  • Intimate, well-equipped teaching labs, including an anatomy lab with human specimens

  • State-of-the-art research laboratories and instrumentation

  • A fully operational greenhouse and community garden

Students have the opportunity to participate in authentic research projects embedded in courses, as well as faculty-mentored research through our Student-to-Scholar (S2S) summer research program or for academic credit during the school year (BIOL 394 / CHEM 394). Research findings are often presented at our annual STEM Research Symposium, with many students also sharing their work at regional and national conferences.

Scriptural Stations of the Cross: A Devotional Reflection on the Science of Jesus’ Crucifixion

For 20 years, Azusa Pacific University professor Cahleen Shrier, PhD, has shared with her biology students a significant and moving lecture outlining the physical suffering leading up to and during Jesus’ crucifixion.

Shrier’s perennial lecture was the focus of a 2002 article on the Science of the Crucifixion, which has since been viewed thousands of times and used in churches and faith communities as a tool for study and prayer.
