Written by Stephen Schwartz, this musical follows the earthly ministry of Jesus Christ through the stories, parables, and teachings found in the Gospel of Matthew. Set against the vibrant backdrop of Coachella, through music, movement, humor, and heartfelt storytelling, audiences are invited to experience Christ’s call to love, serve, forgive, and live in faith as His journey leads toward the Cross and the hope of redemption. This production is co-directed by guest artists Brian and Leah Purcell, who bring their unique creative perspective to this joyful and inspiring musical.
“We begin our 2026-27 season by joining composer Stephen Schwartz (Wicked) and the Broadway community in celebrating the 50th anniversary of Godspell on Broadway,” said Jill Lincoln, MA, chair of APU’s Department of Theater Arts.
Following this production, the APU ’26-27 season will continue with A Christmas Carol: A Radio Play, Dancing at Lughnasa, Rosencrantz & Guildenstern are Dead, and Sondheim on Sondheim. The department is nationally recognized for its BFA in Acting for the Stage and Screen and is dedicated to producing exceptional theatrical experiences through rigorous training and innovative programming. The Department of Theater Arts prepares outstanding, innovative, and influential artists in an ever-growing and multi-faceted performing arts profession.
