Initially drawn to Azusa Pacific University because of his older brother, Efaobasi Ekpe ’26 is pursuing a career in acting, sharing the hope and power of God through stories. Enamored by the beauty and community of the campus, Ekpe committed to APU, looking to continue his walk with Christ and with theater. Through leading roles, trusting in God, and deep conversations with peers, Ekpe is changing APU for the better.

As a student in the BFA in Acting for the Stage and Screen program, Ekpe is learning how to hone his craft to bring glory to God. “I feel God has called me to this path. I want to uncover so much about His world and people through storytelling,” said Ekpe. “That can be a challenge, holding myself to such a high standard, constantly wanting to do better and do more. Not a bad challenge, but a big one.” Learning techniques from the professors in the program, as well as connecting with peers, has helped Ekpe along his journey. “I am finding ways to dive deeper into characters, and that is strengthened by the real-world connections I have with other students in the program. Profound conversations influence my art, and I hope to inspire others in turn,” said Ekpe.

Ekpe is also double-majoring in Honors Humanities, leading fellow students in conversation about faith, ethics, and the human experience. “I have loved my time in the Honors College. It has allowed me to explore more about myself and the world around me,” said Ekpe. Reading works about ethics, faith, and leadership has helped guide Ekpe. “Conversations in colloquy inform my craft and life outside of Honors,” said Ekpe. “I am constantly using what I have learned in all elements of my life.”

With a passion for connection, Ekpe has formed profound relationships with classmates, professors, and friends. “Going to see Sinners with fellow Black actors, and relishing that moment of cultural celebration and beautiful art, is one of my favorite memories,” said Ekpe. Being a leader with roles like Mr. Darcy in APU’s production of Pride and Prejudice, Ekpe has seen the importance of showing up for others and fostering community.

Art is transformative, and if I am able to move others and share a story with them, that is a reward in itself.

As Ekpe continues to develop his craft and looks towards the future, he hopes that he can bring glory to God through it all. “My success is seeing God’s name be glorified in the different stories I am able to tell, in writing, directing, and acting,” said Ekpe. “I want to see lives changed through His name.” Ekpe also aims to establish an acting program in Nigeria, honoring his parents and continuing his brother's dream, sharing the power of storytelling. “I want to set up a program that gives actors the experience they need to tell their stories, and highlight individuals that may not have had the opportunity to share before,” said Ekpe. “The impact won’t be monetary, but seeing the fruition of God’s goodness and work in others' lives. I want to share through the gifts and opportunities that God has given me.”

Through his time on campus, Ekpe has grown as a student, a leader, and a disciple of Christ. “APU has allowed me to recognize my need for community and humility,” said Ekpe. “I am learning how to remain humble as a Christian, fear God, and prioritize my one-on-one time with God as well as fellowship. I always aim to keep God as my root and bring Him into community, discipling and growing with others.” Ekpe is learning how to be both at the front lines for God and taking a step back to learn from others in their journey. The community at APU allows for deep conversations that have helped shape Ekpe’s journey through faith. He continues to lean into God’s Word and work towards the glory of God in everything that he does.

As Ekpe finishes out his final year at APU, he has recognized the ways in which he has been able to grow and learn from his time on campus. “I found myself returning to my favorite quote by T.S. Elliot,” said Ekpe. “‘We shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring, will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time.’ That encapsulates my time as a student.” When he first arrived on campus, Ekpe had no idea what the next four years would hold. Now, as a senior, he recognizes the transformative power that the APU community and God have had in his life. Ekpe continues to be a leader, a faithful disciple, and a powerful storyteller on campus, positively impacting the lives of others on campus and beyond.
