Biography

Brenda Whitehill Schlenker is a photography-based contemporary artist with a background in graphic design. She spent the first decade of her post-undergraduate career as an award-winning designer at Los Angeles area design firms that specialized in entertainment advertising and packaging, before starting a freelance practice. Eventually that practice would engage in design and branding solutions for non-profit organizations, and include teaching graphic design and photography. Today, her interest in design and typography shows up in her non-commercial photography work, where processes include various combinations of digital montage, collage, alternative darkroom techniques, and non-photographic interventions including needlework. In an era when the assumption that photographs capture reality no longer exists, she considers larger realities of what it means to be human, part of this particular time and part of all time.
