August's Featured Student: Samuel Bixby '20

Written by Regina Ender

Considering Sam Bixby is already landing roles with national recognition, he’s earned himself more than just an “aspiring actor” title. The first semester of his sophomore year, he performed in a showcase put on by NBC, allowing him to utilize the skills he was learning in the classroom for a major network. He was simultaneously taking Intermediate Acting at APU and said his educational experiences honed his skills and directly prepared him for the showcase. Though the acting major is just beginning his junior year, he is well-prepared for the path he’s forging for himself. Upon graduating in 2020, he hopes to hit the ground running and dive into acting on television in Hollywood full time.

On campus, Bixby’s acting has received widespread recognition as well. This spring, he played Reverend John Hale in APU’s production of The Crucible under the direction of Chance Theater’s legendary artistic director Oanh Nguyen. Bixby’s talent and passion earned him a nomination for an Irene Ryan Award from The Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival in Washington, D.C, which is given to outstanding student actors who have mastered their craft. He recalls the experiences preparing for The Crucible role as some of the most formative moments in his education thus far, challenging him to be a better actor and storyteller. The community of actors and friends he’s fostered at APU has pushed him to be his best, encouraged him to ambitiously strive for success, reminded him why he started his acting journey, and challenged him to never give up.

In his future career, Bixby hopes to continue using his gift for the greater good by serving as a voice for those whose stories have yet to be heard. To give back to the next generation of young actors, Bixby gives his time and talent volunteering to teach community acting classes and arts camps for youth. He has had a passion for telling stories since he was young and wants to help foster this same love for children in any way he can.

Words of Wisdom: “You and everyone around you are all in the same boat. You are all scared and you are all hoping to find a place. As you search for that place, be encouraging and supportive of those around you, because life is easier when people love each other and lift each other up.”
